House to vote on releasing classified files on convicted paedophile amid growing GOP divisions

Republicans are preparing a mass rebellion against Donald Trump in a vote to release all classified files related to Jeffrey Epstein.

At least 100 or more Republicans are expected to support the release of the files after a selection of emails sent by the deceased paedophile financier that frequently mention the US president were made public on Wednesday.

Mr Trump was friends with Epstein before the pair fell out in the early 2000s, but has always denied any knowledge of or involvement with Epstein’s sex-trafficking or abuse of underage girls.

However, the furore over Mr Trump’s former links to Epstein continues to cause major rifts in his base.

Mike Johnson, speaker of the US House of Representatives, said on Wednesday he would hold a vote next week to compel the Justice Department to release the remaining files.

Senior Republicans believe the vote will provoke dozens of their own to vote against the president’s wishes, Politico reported, citing unnamed sources.

Mr Trump, who has accused Democrats of trying to “deflect” attention from their own failings, has been heavy-handedly lobbying against holding the Epstein vote.

His opposition places Republicans in a precarious spot – split between their loyalty to the president and their constituents’ demands for full transparency.

Top Trump officials reportedly hosted Lauren Boebert, the hard-Right Republican, in the White House Situation Room to push her to take her name off the petition.

However, she refused to back down and the petition passed when Adelita Grijalva, a Democratic congresswoman, was sworn-in after weeks of delay and provided the final signature needed.

The Epstein material released so far amounts to less than 1 per cent of the cache the Justice Department claims to have.

Epstein died in 2019 while in a Manhattan prison awaiting trial on sex trafficking changes, in what the US government ruled was suicide.

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee said the three emails released that specifically mention the US president raised “serious questions about Donald Trump and his knowledge of Epstein’s horrific crimes”.

There are 20,000 emails related to Epstein in the cache, released by Republicans. Mr Trump’s name appears repeatedly.
