The first senior Trump administration official to resign over the Iran war has criticised Israel following Donald Trump’s announcement that he was postponing the strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure.
Joe Kent, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, stepped down from the US government last Tuesday, suggesting the US president had been “deceived” by Israeli authorities.
He has taken to X to suggest that the Trump administration would not be able to end the war without “restraining” Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, despite Mr Trump’s announcement.
Mr Kent said: “Step one in de-escalation must be restraining the Israelis, otherwise all efforts to negotiate will follow this pattern: the president publicly announces de-escalation.
“Israel takes major strikes to destroy the negotiations and in turn weakens our ability to negotiate. The war accelerates.”
