CHIP SHORTAGE CRISIS SPEREADS EUROPEAN DEFENCE, AIR INDUSTRIES THREATENED BY NEXPERIA CHIP SHORTAGE AS VOLKSWAGEN PREARES TO SHUT DOWN ITS FACTORIES

The shortage of Nexperia chips following Trump s orders to the Dutch government to seize a Chinese chip manufactuer in The Netherlands last week threatens car production in Europe and Japan with European companies preparing to halt production.

Vokswagen set to stop production in its biggest factory producing Golf model next Wednesday underscoring the dependence of European companies on the Chinese semi conductor.

Car companies across Europe and Japan including Volvo, Honda and Nissan, have warned that the Dutch takeover of a Chinese-owned chip manufacturer could hit production at factories.

Last week’s decision by the Netherlands government to take control of Nexperia has sent shock waves around the auto industry, which is already facing potential shortages in products such as magnets amid China’s latest restrictions on rare earths exports.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, whose members include Nissan, Toyota, Honda and Mazda, said on Thursday it had received a warning from Nexperia that chips could now be in short supply, potentially holding up manufacturing.

“The chips manufactured by the affected manufacturers are important parts used in electronic control units, etc, and we recognise that this incident will have a serious impact on the global production of our member companies,” the association said. “We hope that the countries involved will come to a prompt and practical solution.”

But Germany s weapons industry, aerospace industry, mechanical engineering and medical technology industries  are also under threat from a severe shortage of chips

Germany s mechanical engineering industry, a world leader in global machine production, also in farms, relies on Nexperia chips for up to 95% of its needs and the medical technological branch up to 86% of its needs with the car industry relying for on the chips from China for 49% of its needs, according to Der Standard.

The company has unveiled a plan to wind down the production in plants with the plants with the most profitable models, including Audi, following.

Vokwagen is in talks with Germany s Employment agency in preparation for the closure of  its factories  affecting tens of thousands of jobs if the shortage persists.

It is also in talks to find alternative chips. But alternative supplier are not so easy to find, industry spokesperson has said.

The entire supply chain has been affected as companies supplying components to car makers also rely on Nexperia chips.

The shortage of chips could lead to an increase in prices.

Last week the Dutch government said it had invoked a cold-war era law to take effective control of Nexperia following concerns raised by the US about the Chinese shareholder Wingtech.

Nexperia, produces large volumes of semicoductors widely used in the automotive industry and consumer electronics. The majority are packaged in China and sold mostly to distributors.
