Europe must invest in high-energy lasers as part of a new, multi-layered air-defence shield to counter the growing threat of hypersonic weapons, a major new study has warned. It follows a stark warning that Europe’s capitals could be destroyed within minutes by Russian or Chinese hypersonic missiles.
Crucially, these are conventionally armed systems: their speed and manoeuvrability allow them to cause mass destruction without crossing the nuclear threshold, meaning traditional deterrence offers little protection. The Rothschild & Co Redburn European Defence Industry Report describes the threat from Mach 5 to Mach 11 weapons as “transformational”, forcing NATO nations into a new era of military investment.
“Hypersonic weapons create a challenge that goes beyond traditional missile defence,” write authors Olivier Brochet and Joe Orchard.
