The EU Commission on Wednesday (13 May) unveiled plans to step up investment in medical supply chains and national health services across the world as part of a Global Health Resilience Initiative — amid warnings that more cases of the hantavirus outbreak should be expected in the coming days.
At a press conference, EU international partnerships commissioner Jozef Sikela pointed to the current hantavirus outbreak, telling reporters that “the reality is that the frequency and intensity of disease outbreaks are increasing” and that the new scheme was the EU’s “answer to three hard truths.”
“First, health threats do not respect borders… Preparedness pays off; investing now saves lives and money later. And third, dependency is really dangerous; no country should rely on a handful of suppliers, as health is no longer the preserve of doctors, but is even weaponised for geopolitical purposes,” Sikela said.

Earlier this week, the European Centre for Disease Control’s director, Dr Pamela Rendi-Wagner, warned that “because of remaining uncertainties and the long incubation period, it is possible that we may see additional cases (of hantavirus) in former passengers and crew in the coming weeks.”
