A senior Air Force officer was arrested Thursday on espionage charges, accused of transmitting highly classified military information to China using specialized encrypted software, according to government and security sources.

Officials said the officer used classified software to transfer sensitive material to final recipients identified as Chinese intelligence services. In his possession, authorities reportedly found a special device equipped with software allegedly supplied by Chinese authorities, enabling him to photograph classified documents and transmit them abroad.

Government sources described the case as one of the most serious espionage incidents uncovered in Greece, saying the officer deliberately leaked classified information to a foreign power using specialized technological means. The suspect is reported to be a wing commander serving as head of a training squadron focused on telecommunications and electronic systems.

He was arrested in Attica and served at an Air Force unit in Kavouri. Officials said he held a senior staff position with access to classified information from the Hellenic Air Force, other branches of the armed forces and allied countries.

The investigation began about two months ago, when the US Central Intelligence Agency informed Greece’s National Intelligence Service that a member of the Greek armed forces was leaking sensitive NATO-related information to China. Due to the seriousness of the case, the intelligence service directly briefed the leadership of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff.

Greek authorities placed the suspect under surveillance and moved to accelerate the arrest after determining he intended to send additional and more sensitive data to Chinese intelligence services. Following his arrest, the suspect reportedly confessed and provided details of his activities during questioning by intelligence and military officials. He allegedly said he was recruited by a Chinese official, likely at a conference abroad, and admitted sending information in exchange for payment.

The alleged handler is believed to be outside Greece, possibly in China, and is known to Western intelligence services. Asked whether the officer acted alone, an official said the matter “is under investigation,” while some reports said he attempted to recruit others.

According to officials, Chinese intelligence sought operational plans and classified communication frequencies of Greek and NATO forces, information that could allow precise monitoring of allied movements in the air, on land, at sea and under the surface.

The officer was brought before the Air Force court late Thursday.
