Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko called on residents of the capital, if possible, to leave the city after a Russian attack on Jan. 9 left half of the city's apartment buildings without heating.
As temperatures dropped below -10°C (14°F), Russia launched a mass attack on Ukraine overnight with 242 drones and 36 missiles, with Kyiv and its surrounding areas being the primary targets, the Air Force reported. The attack hit energy infrastructure facilities and multiple residential buildings in the capital, killing at least four people and injuring 19 others.
"We are doing everything we can to resolve this as quickly as possible. However, the combined attack on Kyiv last night was the most devastating for the capital's critical infrastructure," Klitschko said.
As of the time of publication, heating was knocked out in about 6,000 apartment buildings across Kyiv — nearly half of the city's total — following the Russian attack overnight, according to the mayor.

Kyiv, home to around 4 million people, has endured multiple of Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure since the start of the full-scale war in 2022. Over past months, Moscow has continued pounding energy facilities, with Ukrainian officials warning that Russia is attempting to shut down the energy grid region by region.

The US was given 3hrs notice prior to launch, the distance the Oreshnik travelled was 1223km at a speed of 13000km/h to the target within 60km of the Polish border.
Interception of this missile was not possible, the missile did not carry a warhead, the destruction of the gas reserves was achieved only by kinetic impact (similar to a meteorite impact)The mayor of Kiev Klitschko has asked Kiev residents those who can, to temporarily leave the city as electricity, heating and water is extremely limited.
This is the 2nd use of this missile which can now be launched from a vehicle and is therefore mobile.
Underground NG storage is not what many people imagine. The closest way to describe it would be an artificial gas field. It is a network of wells, gas turbines, water pumps, pipelines (both gas and water) and corresponding valves. The surface infrastructure is the easiest to destroy, but it is wide spread and relatively easy to restore. The reservoir itself (a massive of porous rock) can be pretty deep (say, 2 km down) and very much indestructible. The appropriate structure that Oreshnik likely targeted was the system of wells. If the attack were successful it would significantly reduce the rates at which NG could be pumped down or recovered from the storage, seriously affecting its factual capacity: it is still there and it is still huge, but only have a cocktail straw for accessing it. It would take a long time and lots of money to solve that!
