A malfunction that prevents air traffic control towers from communicating with air planes has shut down Greek airspace since about 9 am this morning until time of writing this at 4 pm.

The cause has not been identified yet, but authorities say it concerns frequencies,implying some kindof jamming.

A Greek Air Force Officer identified a mysterious noise on mountains like Pelion, near Larisa, as apotential factor for the unpecedented blackout.

The fact the Greek air tellecommnications systems are very old may have contributed to the black out or made them more easy to jam

Jamming radio frequencies is a key way of fighting drones.

Noise jamming is used also against planes.

If deliberate jamming is involved, it is not clear who the actor responsible for it is or what technology they are using.

If it is deliberate jamming with a new technology, it represents a massive problem for the West, NATO.

Not clear if Greek and NATO  air force assets have been affected, but these have a different communication system from the civilian airspace.

The malfunction has led to the suspension of all take offs from airports in Greece. Planes in the air have to land  without communications with the tower using special procedures.

Airlines cannot check in luggage.
