Greek academics in Greece and abroad say provisions in a draft bill by the Ministry of National Defense would hinder the careers of Greek scientists working overseas, particularly younger researchers.
The bill is scheduled to be introduced for a parliamentary vote on January 8.
In a statement presented by the Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies (HIAS), whose members include Greek professors and researchers from Greece and the diaspora, critics argue that articles 171-243 of the bill introduce restrictive conscription rules affecting study deferments and early-stage careers abroad
