The protest on a key north south motorway connecting Athens and Thessaloniki was sparked by the failure of Mitsotakis and his government to make critical subsidies to the farmers facing soaring energy and production costs.
4000 tractors have joined the blockades set up throughout Greece with farmers pledging to stay put until they receive payments.
More than 30 people were arrested last week in a fraud case that revealed millions of euros were paid in illegal subsidies by the organisation in charge of distributing EU farm funds, OPEKEPE.
Tellingly, most of the illegal funds went to farmers or persons in Crete, which is Kyriakos Mitostakis political base
Of the 1,036 tax numbers that were found to have received illegal subsidies, 850 are located in Crete. Of these, 273 received amounts exceeding 20,000 euros, according to data.

Farmers are asking for the names of all the people who received the subsidies should be publicized amid speculation that many people have links to Mitsotakis and his family in Crete.
In addition to soaring costs, farmers have also been hit by an outbreak of diseases among animals.
On 11 June the European Commission imposed a 415-million-euro fine on Greece for the systematic mismanagement of agricultural aid from 2016 to 2023 – again involving OPEKEPE.
Farmers fear the fine will be paid out their subsidy pot.
It has been speculated that some people are set to be able to buy up a lot of prime farm land if they can bankrupt farmers by withholding subsidies while funnelling extra funds to themselves.
The massive protests show just how unpopular the Mitsotakis government has becme
