Researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences, IIASA, and the University of Vienna have said the population of the Ukaine could decline by 21-31% by 2052 due to the war.

Four  scenarios of the impact of the war on population projections until 2052 were considered. 

In the worst case scenario of a long war, the population could decline by 31% from 43.3 million people at the beginning of 2022 to 29.9 million people in 2052.

The researchers expect  Ukraine s population to shrink by a fifth or 21 % even in the best scenario of a quick end to the war.

The number of young people under 20 could almost halve at 43% in the worst case scenario or decline by one third in the best case scenario of 35%.
